What is a Larp?

As noted on our LARP calendar, I have chosen to narrowly define LARP for the purposes of this blog. There is a large and growing umbrella of Live Action Role-Paying games from Vampire the Masquerade and other “hotel” events – I don’t really care about all of that, because when you open the scope too wide you end up arguing with some Finnish asshole about latex weapons for far longer than is good for your health or their economy.

Larp Injuries

So what are the most serious injuries you have ever seen in your 15 years of LARPing? Generally, people wrenching their knees, ankles or backs before the start of game. Another chap made a leaping, diving attack and landed wrong on his arm, breaking it (or was it a wrist?). Oh, someone wearing shorts tore through a mass of brambles and cut up his legs pretty good.

Latex Weapons at an Event

As mentioned before, we both needed shields. In fact after reviewing numerous sites, I found none that really stood out. Because of the set patterns, you either find a shield that perfectly fits your concept (Elves and Paladins, it seems are well off) or you’re left with a tiny wooden buckler looking thing, as if you’d suddenly been surprised during a dinner and run outside with a wooden trencher to defend your home and honor.
